Powerball is one of the most popular lottery scheme in The United States. Indeed, the jackpot typically rises quickly to considerable amount. As a result, winning the game makes multiple millionaires every year in the country. Winners have the options of collecting a one time large sum or get paid in installments. If like others, you will like to be counted as one of the Powerball jackpot winners, here are some tips on how to increase your chances of winning, as well as the odds of hitting it big.
Which states sell Powerball tickets?
First, you need to find out if your state sells Powerball tickets.Currently, you can only buy the lottery ticket in forty-five states in the United States, plus Washington, D.C.,. Normally, you can get a ticket at a gas station, convenience store, liquor store, some supermarkets and kiosks. In addition, you can even the ticket online.
However, the following states do not sell Powerball tickets: Alabama, Alaska, Hawaii, Nevada, and Utah. If you live in one of these states, you best bet is to start calling in favors from your out-of-state friends.
Then you pick your numbers! According to the Powerball website, lottery players can choose their own numbers or have them randomly generated. For Powerball, there are six numbers: Five numbers between 1 and 70, and then one power Ball number, which is between 1 and 25. To win the jackpot, you must get all six numbers correct.
How to play Powerball
In general Powerball costs $2 per play. But In some states like Idaho and Montana, Powerball cost $3 per play because it comes with Power Play.
A-Pick your numbers
Select five numbers between 1 and 69 for the white balls, then select one number between 1 and 26 for the red Powerball.
Choose your numbers on a play slip or let the lottery terminal randomly pick your numbers.

C- How many numbers do you need to win a prize in Powerball?
The Powerball jackpot grows until it is won. Players win a prize by matching one of the 9 ways to win. The jackpot is won by matching all five white balls in any order and the red Powerball.
Jackpot winners may choose to receive their prize as an annuity, paid in 30 graduated payments over 29 years, or a lump-sum payment. Both advertised prize options are prior to federal and jurisdictional taxes.
D.1- How to claim your prize
Sign the back of your ticket and take it to an authorized lottery sales agent for validation. If you win a prize greater than $599, you may need to complete a claim form and send it to the state’s lottery commission.
Winning tickets are subject to validation and must be claimed in the state in which they were purchased. The period in which you must claim your winning ticket varies by state:
|U.S. Virgin Islands
Ask for Power Play with your Powerball purchase!
For an additional $1 per play, the Power Play feature can multiply non-jackpot prizes by 2, 3, 4, 5 or 10 times!
The multiplier number is randomly selected before each drawing.
The 10X multiplier is only in play when the advertised jackpot annuity is $150 million or less.
The Match 5 prize with Power Play is always $2 million.
In each Powerball draw, ticket buyers must choose six numbers from 1 to 69, corresponding to the white balls, and one number from 1 to 26 for the red ball, also known as the red PowerBall. To win the jackpot, you must hit all five numbers plus the Mega Ball. The probability of this happening is extremely low: 1 in more than 300 million.
While some people recommend mixing odd and even numbers when buying a ticket, as well as high and low numbers, statistically, some numbers do appear more than others.
According to the history of Lotto Numbers, from September 6, 1996 to August 1, 2023, the white ball numbers that have appeared the most are: 31, 17, 46, 20 and 10, while the most repeated red ball numbers are 9, 15, 3, 10 and 1.
According to Mark Glickman, a senior statistics lecturer at Harvard University, another tip to win the jackpot is to choose completely random numbers, without patterns of any sort.
More tickets = more chances of winning
Because this is just like any lottery, is a game of chance, Glickman says that the best way to increase your chances of winning is simply to buy more tickets, within reason of course. If the probability of your winning the jackpot is 1 in 302,575,350 with one ticket, it becomes 2 in 302,575,350 if you buy two.
Although you can mathematically increase your odds of winning with more tickets, the probability of taking home the jackpot remains infinitesimal. It would take an enormous amount of money to increase your chances significantly.
To win your best bet would be to buy several tickets with a different power Ball number on each of them. Matching the winning red Ball will get you a return on your money.
Others tips to Improve your odds
- Repeat the same number
The best thing you can do to improve your odds is to play the same numbers every single day.
- Mix Even & Odd Numbers
You want to increase your chance by avoiding having all even or all odd. Only 3% of the past numbers have been all even or all odd.
- Split Between Low & High Numbers
Every lottery tip site, I ever visited, says that you should divide your numbers between the low (1-30) and high (40-75) range. The suggestion is that you split your numbers evenly between low and high to increase your chances of winning.
- Add Up Those Numbers
Experts suggest that you should add up the five numbers you pick and try to stay within a target range. The preferred range is between 140 and 240 after your five number are added together. More than half of the winning number combinations fall in that range.
- Don’t Group Your Numbers Together
Number grouping usually means putting all of your numbers in the same 10 number range.
- Don’t Repeat Winning Numbers
It’s only happened once in the lotto history where the identical set of numbers showed up in consecutive draws. Playing like this would take your bad odds, and make them worse.
- Choose frequently drawn numbers
Some seasoned Powerball players believe that numbers that have already been drawn frequently are more likely to be drawn again.
